Medial patella-femoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is a procedure used to correct serious and recurring dislocation of the kneecap. MPFL is the major ligament which stabilizes the patella and helps in preventing patellar subluxation (partial dislocation) or dislocation. Dislocation can be caused by a direct blow to the knee, twisting injury to the lower leg, strong muscle contraction, or because of a congenital abnormality such as shallow or malformed joint surfaces.
The surgery includes using a ligament taken from elsewhere in the body or a synthetic replacement. The surgeon reconstructs the MPFL to keep the kneecap in the trochlear groove, preventing dislocation. After surgery, patients will complete physical therapy for 3 to 6 months to ensure the muscles are strong and stable. Patients can expect to return to unrestricted activities by 6 months to 1 year after surgery.
