Vertebroplasty is an injection technique – to provide pain relief in pathological fractures when they do not respond to bed rest and medications. Here bone cement – Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is injected into the bone to make it mechanically stronger. This helps to relieve the pain arising from that bone. Most common indication are Osteoporotic fractures and tumours.
Here a balloon is inserted in to the fractured bone and the height of the bone is restored. This restoration of height is not possible in Vertebroplasty. This helps to regain the sagittal balance so that the kyphotic (forward bending) deformity of the upper back can be prevented.
